i like to use

this one lets you type a huge message at once and send it in parts to your friend.
maybe someone else will find this helpful.

I found this one,
http://www.cellphonemessagesender.com/
but I'm not sure how well it works. You have a 140 character limit, and it seems like it's free to use, but doesn't support all carriers. It has the major ones, Verizon, T-mobile, AT&T, even a couple crappy ones like Boost and Virgin Mobile. I guess I could try it out and see how well it works.

AOL messenger and Yahoo messenger support free SMS.
Bulletin cost a little. I like it because I can use it with Outlook, and it is also international.

In Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010 there is a section for setting up SMS messages.
In Bulletin's case you give your cellphone number, and also email address in your account. They send a text to your phone with the code, or I've gotten them to email it to me as well, so now they'll do both.
You, in Outlook 2010 press control/caps and T and the window opens for sending the message. Type a phone number in the to field tab, type your message, and you send it.
When the person answers it comes back to you in your email.
Yes, it cost.
There are other services, but I choose Bulletin, because they were the most accessible.
There is also an online messenger, and other services as well, but Outlook gives me the luxury of not having to have an extra browser tab open, just outlook.
It is not free, but really cheap, but not suitable for this topic being not free.

ah the way i was thinkin was
sending a number to
XXXXXXXXXX@tmomail.net
which is how you send a ttext to a T-Mobile number
replacing the x's with a number.
send it from whatever email program you use and when they respond it comes back as text in your email.
every company you can do that with, if you know what to put after the @ sign.
